Product Development Manager

Dairyfood USA, Inc., an SQF Level 3 certified market leader in specialty cheese production for over 60 years, is currently seeking a Product Development Manager to manage, coordinate and perform research and product development activities for the organizations products and services, while maintaining compliance with the quality assurance programs designed to ensure continuous production of products consistent with established standards.  Based in our production facility in heart of America’s Dairyland, Blue Mounds, WI, this position reports to the company president.

Primary Job Functions:

Product Development/R&D

  • Lead the formulation, development and evaluation of new products within the product design guidelines of SQF
    • Identify potential opportunities through regular external meetings and phone calls with clients and experts, industry meetings, trade publications, and Internet research
    • Facilitate communication of client input through staff interaction and promote idea generation internally from Production and Sales.
  • Observe external environment for new product and process technologies
  • Evaluate operational feasibility and identify methods of deployment where there are gaps between potential product requirements and current Dairyfood USA competencies
  • Create, screen and market test products
  • Focus on Cost, Quality, Service and Innovation, ensuring that PD is consistent with the company’s strategic and financial goals
  • Develop and manage the PD budget
  • Monitor ongoing adherence to documented PD
  • Develop metrics to track and predict expected return on PD investment
  • Develop new product databases for bill of materials (BOM)
  • Develop product spec sheets for use on the production line
  • Develop QCPs and CCPs for new products and coordinate routing with Production
  • Build relationships and partnerships with key opinion leaders, scientific experts and centers of academic excellence, as appropriate to further the program
  • Partner with Production to ready newly developed products
  • Partner with Sales and Marketing to put together material used in the initial product marketing efforts
  • Work with the Management Team to help create the company’s long term product development priorities

Quality Assurance

  • Ensure compliance with Safe Quality Food (SQF) Level 3 certification
  • Employ and maintain Hazard Analysis & Critical Control Points (HACCP) food safety management system
  • Set up/maintain quality standards and systems and key quality standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  • Provide expertise in regulatory and labeling requirements
  • Facilitate implementation & proper use of quality systems across quality assurance (QA) and Operations (e.g., supplier QA, equipment control, validation master plans, document control, product ID & traceability, nonconformance, change control, risk assessments, training programs);
  • Serve as the Process Authority for Low Acid Canned Foods (LACF) and Processed Cheese, attend Better Process Control School and Better Processed Cheese School and maintain certification
  • Become a registered Pasteurizer, attend Milk Pasteurization and Process Control School
  • Comply with all food safety programs and assist in the development of food safety programs for new products
  • Keep up-to-date on government regulations in place and pending legislation
  • Act as a liaison between the company and state and federal regulatory agencies
  • Accompany regulatory inspectors auditing the facility and provide necessary documents for review and prepare any written response
  • Provide guidance and support for 3rd party audits and assist the auditor in the policy and program review, and provide the corrective action plan

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Dairy Science, Food Science, Microbiology or a related field
  • A minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible professional experience in an applied R&D environment in the food manufacturing
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in food production and processing, product development, quality assurance and regulatory compliance

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A Master’s degree in Food Science, Microbiology or other related sciences
  • A minimum of 5 years of professional experience in an applied R&D environment in the processed cheese industry
  • Experience managing a team of Food Scientists
